The rich colours of the bronze-leaved fennel and euphorbia complement the colour of the warm terracotta pot beneath. Tall euphorbia stems give height to the display while the wispy, feathery foliage of the fennel adds texture and movement. Weaving through display are delicate saxifrages, which bring spots of colour among the foliage.

You Will Need
- Euphorbia 'Efanthia'
- Mossy saxifrage 'Peter Pan'
- Ajuga reptans 'Black Scallop'
- Saxifraga ferdinandi coburgi 'Drakula'
- Foeniculum vulgare 'Purpureum'
- 30cm terracotta pot
- Crocks
- Multi-purpose, peat-free compost
Total time: 30 minutes
Step 1

Adding compost to the pot
Cover the base of the pot with crocks, then fill it two-thirds full with compost.
Step 2

Planting the euphorbia
Plant the euphorbia and fennel plants towards the back of the pot, then plant the saxifrages and ajuga at the front. Space plants well so they have room to grow.
Step 3

Adding compost around the plants
Top up the pot with compost, firming it around the plants with your fingers.
Step 4

Adding gravel around the plants

Add a thick mulch of gravel to add contrast to the colours, and help conserve moisture. Water the pot well and allow to drain thoroughly before popping it in its final planting postion.
Kevin Smith says...
Dark stems and foliage always create impact in a container display – give them standout by combining them with bright blooms and zingy colours. Position this pot in a bright, sunny spot for the best results.
