Carex flagellifera is a fantastic ornamental grass native to New Zealand. Plants form a low, cascading mound of orange-brown foliage, from which insignificant flowers appear in spring. It works well as path edging, in rockeries and also as a specimen plant in a container. In mild areas it's a low-maintenance plant showing good tolerance to drought, however in colder regions it may need protection over winter.

For best results grow Carex flagellifera in moist but well-drained soil in a sheltered site. Divide congested clumps in spring but plants will readily self-seed.
