Carrots, Daucus carota, are easy to grow and taste much sweeter than those bought commercially. They are an excellent source of Vitamin A and antioxidants. For best results grow in free-draining soil, such as sandy soil, which warms up quickly in spring, aiding germination. Prepare soil well to remove stones, otherwise the roots may fork, and cover seedlings with horticultural fleece to prevent carrot root fly from laying eggs in the crop.

Daucus carota 'Cascade' is a particularly sweet carrot, and may be grown as baby carrots or left to mature. The roots store well over winter.
