Duranta erecta is an pretty evergreen shrub or small tree with violet flowers in summer. It is widely cultivated in tropical climates around the world but is a rare and unusual shrub in the UK. It is considered an invasive species in several countries including Australia, China and South Africa.

This tender shrub is best grown in a conservatory in the UK, although it can be grown in a pot outside in the warmer months and overwintered indoors. The mature plants have sharp thorns. In autumn, yellow-orange fruits ('dewdrops') may appear.
