Although Luzula nivea (snowy woodrush) looks like a grass, it is not a grass. Rather, it's a spreading, clump-forming evergreen perennial. It has rich, green leaves, which contrast with pure white summer flowers held on tall stems. A member of the rush (Juncaceae) family, it thrives in moist soil.
Luzula nivea is commonly used for ground-cover and edging paths, particularly in shade. However it will tolerate a sunny spot as long as the soil is moist enough. It is a vigorous plant and can be invasive, however it rarely causes problems in gardens as it's used as a ground cover plant and therefore does its job perfectly.
Grow snowy woodrush in moist but well-drained soil in partial shade to full sun. Lift and divide congested colonies every three years, between from mid spring to midsummer. Tidy up foliage in spring.
