Mattihola longipetala, or night-scented stock, is a hardy annual native to Eurasia, grown predominantly for its lilac-coloured flowers that release a sweet perfume at night.
Start sowing them in late winter then continue sowing throughout spring and summer for a continued show. Direct sowing is best as they dislike being transplanted. Plants can look straggly if planted solo, so try sprinkling the seeds in the bare patches of a sunny border, or if growing in pots, sow more heavily to get a bushier look.
For best results, grow Mattihola longipetala in full sun in moist, well-drained soil. Pick off spent blooms to keep the flowers coming.
